July Hive Queen

Hello! I have a super short post today. Perhaps to make up for my long one on Wednesday! ;) July is my month as queen over at my Threadbias hive and I'm really excited! I have decided on a Christmas in July theme using an x and + block. You saw my finished block on Wednesday.
I used this tutorial to get a 12.5" unfinished block. I'm so excited to see what my hivemates come up with for their versions!

WIP Wednesday

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced
Sew Fresh Quilts
Hello! Have I got a busy WIP Wednesday for you! I'm going to start with what I'm most excited about. I have been commissioned to make a twin-size quilt for a friend's 11-yr-old daughter. They are decorating her room in their new house and she has chosen a theme and color scheme that I think is both modern and timeless. She loves chevron, gray and what I call Tiffany blue. The fabrics she chose are ones that she loves now and will love even 10 years from now. I'm so excited to get started on this quilt!
A couple weeks ago I did my x and + cross stitch block for LMS Quilty Stitches. However, I realized after I finished it, that I did it wrong. :( So I ripped it out yesterday and redid it. Boy was that a challenge! It is not easy to rip out cross stitches. The picture on top is the old version. The one on the bottom is the new, "correct" version. I like it so much better and am glad I started over.

I have my fabric cut for my Nested Churn Dash and I'm excited to get going on the construction. I think it will go together pretty quickly.
It's not even the end of June and I already have my $5 quilt June blocks done! They're not "due" until mid-July. :)
I also got the preview block done for my month as Queen in my Threadbias hive. Since my month is July and I have no Christmas quilts, I am going with a Christmas in July theme! I decided on an x and + block and used some scraps of Christmas fabric. I will be posting a tutorial on this later in the week for my hive mates and I can't wait to see their versions!
Goodness, that's a lot! :)

WIP Wednesday

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced
Sew Fresh Quilts
Hello! I am finally getting started on my Nested Churn Dash as part of Quiltjane's quilt-along. I am doing the king-size version so I doubt I'll get it done within the quilt-along's timeline but we'll see. I'm using the Hampton Hues collection from Connecting Threads. I love their fabric. It is top quality at unbeatable prices. You can check out other nested churn dash blocks on Flickr. I'm just in the cutting phase so I have a long way to go!

On Monday I made a hanging fabric basket to use as a bill holder outside my husband's office. We're bad at organizing our mail when it comes in so bills have a tendency to get "lost." This way they have a designated place and can now get paid on time! Hopefully. :) I used this tutorial to make the basket and it was very easy. I modified it to use hooks instead of a hanging rod because I had hooks on hand. I'm thinking about making one a bit bigger to use as a magazine holder in the bathroom.

Finish it up Friday

Hello! I have a quick finish for you today. This is my June block for hive #8 over at Threadbias. Morgan asked for any star block in purple and gray. She gave us a list of star block tutorials as a jumping off point and I chose the You Are Here block by Monica at Happy Zombie. Here is the final product:

I think it looks pretty cool. I never realized how much I like purple and gray together! I'll have to remember this combo. Now this block will make it's long journey to New Zealand!

WIP Wednesday

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced
Sew Fresh Quilts

Hello! If you remember last week, my son taped a sign outside my sewing room to remind me to get going on his quilt for Huggy. Well, not only did I get going on it, I finished the top! This is a snowball block that finishes at 5". I'm thinking about writing up a tutorial. Is anyone interested?

The backing will be the Chuggington fabric and the binding will be the green polka dot fabric. I am planning on doing Leah Day's railroad tracks quilting design on it but probably a bit bigger than what her tutorial demonstrates. I took a 2-class series on free motion quilting at my LQS the last couple Saturdays and I'm excited to actually use what I learned on a real quilt!

Little Miss Shabby

I am really excited about this week's cross stitch block over at Little Miss Shabby. It's a Japanese X & + block and I absolutely love these blocks! I've been going back and forth about making this block for my month as queen over at my Threadbias Newbee Quilters Hive. I'm in Hive #8 if you want to check out what we're doing.

Finish it up Friday

Hello! I have finished the ilove2QUILT mini quilt that Lorna from Sew Fresh Quilts designed. She will have it, as well as an ilove2SEW pattern, available to purchase soon and I am honored to have been able to test the pattern for her. My seams ended up a little too narrow so my borders were a little short but with a little trimming and some fudging, I used Tim Gunn's advice to "Make it work!" There is a bit of puckering here and there because of my fudging but once it's quilted it will probably never be noticed. And since it's for my wall I'm okay with it. My motto is "It's not perfect but neither am I." :) Here is Max holding it up so I could get a nice, natural light photo. He loves "helping" me quilt. :)

And speaking of my son, one of my next projects will be for him. Or, rather, his stuffed monkey, Huggy. I had purchased some Chuggington fabric and a green and white polka dot fabric to make a couple pillow cases for the travel pillows he used to use in his toddler bed. I never got them made, though, and now he's in a full-size big-boy bed with standard pillows. So the fabric has just been sitting around with no purpose. Max has requested that I make a Huggy quilt.

I haven't had a chance to start it yet so he wrote me a note today and taped it outside my sewing room to remind me. It means "Max's mom, please make Huggy's quilt." I guess I should get on that! ;)

WIP Wednesday

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced
Sew Fresh Quilts

Hello! I have recently become blog friends with Lorna from Sew Fresh Quilts and am very excited to be testing out a brand new pattern for her! It is a mini quilt called ilove2QUILT. It is absolutely adorable and I have the perfect spot to hang it in my sewing room when I get it done - right over my ironing station. The pattern is done with solid colors in an ombre pattern but Lorna said we can use our stash so mine has more of a scrappy rainbow look. I am using (2) 6pc fat quarter collections from JoAnn's that I received for Christmas and a few more fabrics that complement those. I'm really excited to get this together and see the final top. And I'm happy to be helping out a new friend!

I also have the fabric pulled for my Newbee Hive #8 June block over at Threadbias. Morgan has asked us to do any star block we want in a purple and gray color scheme. I'm really excited about this because I love star blocks! She gave us a list of examples and I chose the You Are Here block by Monica at Happy Zombie. I can't wait to get started and to see all the blocks Morgan gets!
