Appliance Handle Cover Redo - Q2 Finish #3

Hello! This quarter is going so much better than the first quarter. I have been doing some form of sewing every day for 24 days in a row and I feel so accomplished! I've made great progress on my Pumpkin Passport cross stitch project and I have my 3rd finish to share with you today.

Back in February, I blogged about some kitchen appliance handle covers I was making for my aunt. They were intended to be a Christmas gift but I didn't finish them in time. Then, as I was adding the Velcro to what I though was the finished product, I realized that I hadn't added enough overlap for them to fit. Then I lost my steam and didn't sew for a while. But my aunt's birthday was this past Sunday (also Mother's Day this year) so I made it a priority to get these covers remade as a birthday gift. And I made it. Barely! ;)

I made 2 sets but only took a picture of one set in their new homes. They are so cute and my aunt loves them! I may have to make some for my own appliances. :)

I'm linking up today to finish it up Friday over at crazy mom quilts.

WIP Wednesday

Hello everyone! I'm trying to get back into a regular blogging routine so I'm writing my blog posts ahead and scheduling them to be posted automatically. We'll see how that goes. ;)

I have finally gotten back to my Nested Churn Dash quilt and I'm really excited about my progress. The last time I blogged about it was here. I finished the other two layers and I absolutely love how these blocks have turned out. I also love that they are gigantic. 24.5" unfinished!

I'll be adding a white tone-on-tone sashing between each block and a dark brown (same fabric as the tiny churn dash) narrow border. This king-sized quilt will finish around 106" square when I'm finished.

I also started a new cross stitch project, The Pumpkin Passport by The Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery. It is a year-long pattern with a new country image released each month. I just purchased it a few weeks ago so I'm a bit behind but I've made pretty good progress. I'm really enjoying working on this at night while I'm watching TV. Max has decided that he likes it so it will hang in his room when it's finished.

Q2 Finish #2

Hello! I'd like to share my 2nd finish for Quarter 2 with you today. Max has been asking for new curtains for his bedroom for quite some time. He picked out a glow-in-the-dark fabric (no longer available) from the Blast Off collection by Connecting Threads and it has been washed and folded, just waiting for me to sew. I finally got around to doing just that while he was in school a couple weeks ago. He was very excited to come home and see them! It's hard to really see the pattern because it's so small but they are constellations.

I had a little over a yard of fabric left over so I decided to make a couple throw pillows for him as well. He loves making pillow forts so these will come in handy! :)

On April 19, @elleluna on Instagram started The 100 Day Project to encourage people to be creative every day for 100 days. I stumbled onto the project the next day but since I had made Max's curtains on 4/19, I decided to participate. And I'm happy to announce that today is day 18 and I have managed to spend at least a small amount of time in my sewing room working on some aspect of the sewing/quilting process every single day! It's exciting and I've really gotten a lot done! Maybe I'll meet all of my goals this quarter. ;)

Q2 Finish #1

Hello everyone! I haven't had time to blog recently but I have been busy. On April 14, I received an email from Jennifer Mathis of Ellison Lane, informing me that I was chosen to be able to purchase a ticket for her Sew South retreat next Spring. I'm so excited that I'm able to go! The next day, I found someone selling their ticket for Glamp Stitchalot in June. She also had a hotel reservation and I'm excited to say that I'm going to that retreat as well! I have never been to a sewing or quilting retreat and from the sounds of things, I'm really doing it up big right out of the gate! :)

I finally got back to sewing and have my first finish of quarter 2 to share with you. My White Stars mini quilt. The pattern is by Jaybird Quilts and is found in the book Fun-Sized Quilts. It measures about 12.5" x 16.5". I went with simple quilting in the ditch around the stars. It's hard to tell in the picture but the stars show up quite nicely on the back of the quilt which I think is cute. It's up on my sewing room wall for now but I may end up listing it for sale in my Etsy shop. I haven't decided yet.

Finish-A-Long Q2 Goals

Hello! Well, it's certainly been a while and I haven't gotten a whole lot of sewing done. The last time I posted was in February when I thought I had finished the handle covers for my aunt's appliances. They were, in fact, too narrow. Bummer. I kind of lost some steam after that and then had to prepare for my little Annabelle's 1st birthday. I can't believe it's been a year since she was born and you'd never know now that she was a preemie!

I did finally get started on my Modern HST Sampler. I'm making a Christmas version and so far, I'm really liking my blocks!

And now for my Q2 goals. I have some big ones!

I have 12 goals this quarter: 7 small projects, 3 quilts and 2 pairs of curtains.
        1. Finish my second Scrap Happy Purse
        2. Fix the appliance handle covers to make them wider
        3. a. Constellation fabric - Max's curtains
            b. Blue dot fabric - Annabelle's curtains
        4. a. Finish Saltwater Mini
            b. Finish Swoon Mini
            c. Finish Quiltilicious Mini
            d. Finish Red Letter Day Mini
            e. Finish White Stars Mini
        5. Finish Midnight Mystery quilt
        6. Finish Nested Churn Dash quilt top
        7. Finish Annabelle's quilt top

Kitchen Appliance Handle Covers

Hello everyone! I was hoping to have my 4th finish for you today but it's remaining a WIP for now. My aunt asked for 2 sets of handle covers for her refrigerator, freezer, oven and microwave doors. I was hoping to have them done for Christmas but like so many other things, I just ran out of time. I have all of them sewn and the Velcro done on 1 of them but I'm afraid they are too narrow. So I need to take the finished one over to my aunt's house and measure. Fingers crossed it fits!

I used fabric from an older collection by Connecting Threads, called Birchtree Lane. I think it will look very nice in my aunt's kitchen.

I Love 2 Quilt

Hello! I have my 3rd 2016 Finish-a-Long finish to show you today. I got the binding on my I <3 2 Quilt wall hanging and it is now ready to go up on my sewing room wall! I put corner hangers on the back, along with a couple loops along the top to slide a piece of wood through. I plan on using Command Strips to hang it on my wall but right now it's temporarily up with push pins. :)

I also starting working on a quick charm square quilt. I needed something quick and easy and this fit the bill right now. :)

Works in Progress

Hello! I've got a few things going this week. I finally finished the quilting on my "I Love 2 Quilt" wall hanging. This is a pattern that I tested for Lorna of Sew Fresh Quilts way back in June, 2014! I started the quilting that summer with the intention of free motion quilting all the white space but I never got around to it. I decided to finish it just using my walking foot and I used a wavy line stitch. I really like how it turned out! Now I just need to bind it and hang it up. :)

I pre-washed the fabrics for my kids' new bedroom curtains. The constellation fabric came from Connecting Threads and glows in the dark. That's for Max's room and he's so excited! The navy with tiny white polka dots is for Annabelle's room. She needs a bit more navy in her decor so this will fit the bill.

I'm excited that several of my microwave bowl cozies have sold through my Etsy shop recently and I need to replenish my stock. My first instinct was to visit Connecting Threads' website and pick out some new fabric to order but, since this is the year of the stash, I went through mine and pulled a bunch of fabric I can use to make more. I found quite a bit and I'm very excited!

Midnight Mystery Top Finished!

Hello. I am excited to show you my finished Midnight Mystery quilt top! Thank you, Cheryl, for creating this beautiful quilt pattern. It has been so cool to see all the variations that have come from it. Cheryl gave us the option to peek at the final pattern before we started to help us decide if we wanted to participate and what fabrics to use. This was my first mystery quilt so I wanted it to be a true mystery and I'm glad I didn't peek!

I chose to use a palette of Patriotic fabrics for my quilt and it worked out perfectly. I don't think I could have planned it better had I peeked! Cheryl told us in the beginning that there would be 4 fabrics - A,B,C and D. A would touch B, B would touch C and C would touch D. But D would not touch A. So with that information, I arranged my fabrics in a way that appealed to me. And it worked out that my navy ended up as the background. I have wanted to use navy as a background for quite some time. Actually since I saw Cheryl use it in her Irish Chain Quilt-a-long quilt! :)

Once I get this quilted and finished, I'll take some outdoor pictures so you can see the colors better. The white is really a silvery gray with small white stars. But until then, here is "Star Spangled."

My first Granny Squares and a zippered tote

Happy WIP Wednesday! This week I made my very first Granny Square blocks. They are for Julie, the January queen of my online bee hive. Julie gave us Lorna's tutorial for making Granny Squares. I enjoy Lorna's work so I was excited to give it a try. It was much easier than I was expecting, even using 3" squares in combination with 2.5" squares. I thought that would be a little awkward but it worked out just fine. I'm leaving the blocks untrimmed so that Julie can make them fit in with all the other blocks she'll receive.

I also have my 2nd finish to share with you and this is the first finish made with only what I had in my stash! So it fits into my Sew My Stash 2016 and The Year of the Stash 2016 goals. Woo hoo! This is what I made for my aunt instead of the Felicity Bag. I have made this bag before but this time, I followed the directions and added fusible fleece. I like it so much more than my original tote! It is much more sturdy and doesn't flop around like mine does. I still like mine and it works for what I use it for but from now on, I will use the fleece. :) I also added a recessed zipper to the top. The pattern does not include any type of closure but my aunt wanted a zipper in case she drops the bag. She doesn't want all of our jewelry going all over the place! So I found a good tutorial and I was so pleased by how simple it was to add the zipper.

I have now completed 2 out of my 8 projects for quarter 1 of the 2016 Finish-A-Long and am feeling very good about my progress. I have until March 31 to finish the other 6 and I am confident that I can do it. I purposely started out with smaller projects to keep my motivation up. The Felicity Bag

Hello! I'm excited to present my first finish for 2016 - The Felicity Bag! Originally I had planned to try to get this finished before Christmas to give to my aunt. She was looking for a bag to carry our jewelry and paperwork back and forth to the jeweler for biannual inspections. But I was not able to finish it for Christmas and as I was getting close to being done, I realized that the style really wasn't what she was looking for. She wanted a tote and this is truly a purse. So I have claimed it as my own and I made her a zippered tote bag. More on that in my next post. Here is my Felicity Bag.

I had a few issues with the pattern. Well, not with the pattern itself, but my understanding of the pattern. Luckily I follow Jennie, of Clover and Violet, on Instagram and was able to message her to get some help. She was so sweet and walked me through my trouble spots and then it was smooth sailing. Really, looking back, I don't know why I had such trouble but I guess my brain just wasn't processing! ;)

I really love this purse. It functions so well for me, is a great size and is very sturdy because of the ByAnnie's Soft and Stable. I really like working with the Soft and Stable. It is easy to sew and it makes a nice looking finished bag without being too heavy.

This is my first finish for quarter 1 of the 2016 Finish-A-Long, of which Jennie is a co-host. Click on the link below for more information on the finish-a-long.

2016 Finish-A-Long Q1 Goals and Sew My Stash 2016

Hello! I hope everyone had wonderful holidays and you're all enjoying the new year so far. My break was definitely busy but good. I was able to get a lot of my pre-Christmas sewing complete. I finished the 2 quilts and the 2 sleep sacks for Annabelle but did not do any of the Christmas sewing that I had wanted to do for me. But now I have plenty of time to get it done for this coming Christmas! :) Here is what I finished:

Rhonda's [Quilt] Ramblings
For 2016, I'm going to participate in the now-global finish-a-long and I'm excited about that! There are 9 bloggers around the world who are hosting this year and I follow a couple of them so I will be linking up today over at Clover and Violet. I had made a list of all of my projects last year and I broke them down into monthly goals but spending 7 weeks in the hospital and having Annabelle in the NICU for 60 days really messed me up! ;) So I think doing the finish-a-long and setting quarterly goals will really help me get back on track. Here are my Q1 goals:
I'm also going to participate in the 2016 Sew My Stash with @projectleasa on Instagram. That means that I will try my very hardest to not buy any new fabric except what I may need for backings/bindings and the block of the month I participate in at my local quilt shop. That will be very hard because Connecting Threads has already come out with some cute new fabric and it's only January 7! But there are so many projects that I have mostly complete "kits" for so I need to get these finished before I move onto something new.

Edited to add: I just learned that Jenn @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge (love that we have the same name!) has a written a manifesto for herself to use only (mostly) her stash this year. She will be hosting periodic link-ups so I will be participating with her as well. :)

Along with all of the above goals, I will also be continuing with my bee blocks over on Flickr, my block of the month blocks and anything else I can work in! Edited to add: I forgot that I'm planning on doing the Modern HST Sampler QAL with Alyce at Blossom Heart Quilts because I love half square triangles. My plan is to use Christmas fabrics.

I'm also linking up today over at Needle and Thread Thursday.

I hope you all have a Sew Crafty week!
